Most people don’t particularly enjoy talking about erectile dysfunction.
While it’s easy to understand why, we’re also concerned that a general lack of discussion around the topic erectile dysfunction merely allows harmful myths to perpetuate.
We’re here to set the record straight.
When you’re dealing with an issue that your friends would rather sweep under the rug than talk about, it’s easy to feel like you’re the only one suffering.
According to British Colombia Medical Journal, people suffering from ED are definitely not alone.
A cross-sectional study of 3921 Canadian men, age 40 to 88, found the overall prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) was 49.4%, and therefore ED affects an estimated 3 million Canadian men over the age of 40.
Take heart. You’re definitely not alone.
If you don’t believe us, pose the question with your guy friends. Our guess is at least one of them is going through it too!
While it’s been proven that men sometimes do have trouble maintaining erections due to psychological factors (say, stress) there are many other potential causes for ED. Male sexual arousal is more complex than you think! It involves the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. If you’re experiencing a problem in any of these areas, that could be part of the reason you’re having trouble downstairs.
Whether physical or psychological factors are at the root of ED (or some combination of the two), there’s no shame in seeking help. There’s a good chance you’re probably not overthinking it. And if you think you’ve got questions that require some guidance, talk to Dr. Stephen de Wit, renowned sexologist (put link for sex counselling page) – He can help solve some of the mysteries in your head, even the kinky kind.
Yes, the risk of ED does tend to increase with age. That by no means makes symptoms inescapable for young men or inevitable for older ones. Things are definitely not black or white here. Include statistics here showing what percentage of men under the age of 30 experience ED.
While an intimate partner may have some knowledge of what’s going on, most men experiencing ED feel shame. As a result, they tend not to tell anyone what they’re dealing with. (Hence Myth #1.)
Unfortunately, keeping silent could also keep you from getting help and if the problems you’re experiencing are treatable, then why wouldn’t you try?! And the good news is, ED is treatable in over 90% of the patients.
That brings us to myth 5 and honestly, this is the one we’re happy to debunk.
Not only is ED treatable, but we’re also part of the solution.
